Using the Data

 

When querying the Central Valley Historic Mapping Project GIS it is important to understand the limitations of the digital coverages. The maps were created using a variety of independent sources with varying scale, accuracy, and completeness.

On the other hand, the information is extremely useful as a regional measurement of natural vegetation change. Using the associated GIS database, queries can be made to estimate regional change at four different stages over a 100-year time span.

A set of queries was run in order to gather acreage statistics on land use changes. Queries were as follows:
